Abstract

Shaykh Muḥammad bin Ṭāhir al-Fattanī was one of the leading scholars ḥadīth and a distinguished author in the field. He was also among the prominent Muslim figures in India during the 10th century (AH). He studied Prophetic ḥadīth under eminent scholars in the two Holy Sanctuaries (al-Ḥaramain). After returning from the Ḥijāz, he devoted himself to teaching, disseminating and authoring works on ḥadīth in his hometown, “Fattan”, in India. Hundreds of scholars, both within India and beyond, graduated under his supervision. He authored numerous valuable works, including those on the accuracy (ḍabṭ) of the names of narrators, the explanation of rare terms in ḥadīth (gharīb al-ḥadīth), the identification of fabricated ḥadīth and biographical accounts of fabricators, as well as other diverse topics related to ḥadīth. His works gained wide acceptance and considerable circulation among scholars and students in India during his lifetime, and they continue to be regarded as important references in the field of ḥadīth studies across the Islamic and Arab world. This study aims to introduce this eminent scholar, distinguished muḥaddith and accomplished author by highlighting the most significant aspects of his personal and scholarly life. It also examines his outstanding academic contributions to the service of ḥadīth through his writings. The researcher adopts both inductive and descriptive methodologies. The inductive method is employed to collect material related to al-Fattanī’s biography and his works, while the descriptive method is used to present and analyze his contributions to ḥadīth literature. The study is divided into two main sections: the first focuses on al-Fattanī’s biography, while the second examines his contributions to the field of ḥadīth. The research concludes with a set of findings and recommendations derived from the study.
