Tanbīh al-Ghāfilīn is a Jawi-scripted religious text authored by Sheikh Abdullah bin Abdul Mubin al-Shāfiʿī in 1306H. The book was printed by several publishing houses, including Mustafa Al-Babiy Al-Halabi Press in Cairo (1342H) and Darul Maʿarif Press in Penang (1354H). The work is divided into twelve chapters, each addressing the punishments for major sins such as abandoning prayer, disobeying parents, consuming alcohol, committing adultery, engaging in liwāṭ (sodomy), consuming usury, mourning excessively, refusing to pay zakal, unlawful killing, severing family ties, neglecting spousal rights, the horrors of the Day of Judgement, and the descriptions of Paradise. The author compiles hadith that warn against these major sins. Most of the hadith in the book are presented in Malay translation without the original Arabic text, sources, chains of transmission (isnād), or any indicalion of their status—whether ṣaḥīḥ, ḥasan, ḍaʿīf, or mawḍūʿ. This study focuses on evalualing the hadith found in Chapter Five, which discusses the punishment for committing liwāṭ, amounting to a total of seven hadith. The research applies the methodology of takhrīj al-ḥadīth, combining classical hadis scholarship with modern digital tools to verify authenticity. Findings reveal that none of the hadith cited in this chapter include any isnād, source, or original Arabic text. One hadis was authenticated as ṣaḥīḥ, one as mawḍūʿ, one as ḍaʿīf, and four hadith had no traceable source, though some had similar wordings found in classical sources. The status of these hadith was established based on the views of recognized hadith scholars (ʿulamāʾ al-ḥadīth).
