Abstract

Muslims constitute approximately 700,000 of the population of Yunnan Province, where Islam was introduced in 1253 during the reign of Kublai Khan. Since that time, mosques have played a central role in religious education and communal life. In recent contexts, however, some mosques have also become venues for the dissemination of weak (ḍaʿīf) ḥadīth through sermons and devotional instruction. This paper argues that Sufis and ascetics (zuhhād), though unintentionally, have contributed to the introduction and popularization of weak ḥadīth among the general public. One major factor underlying this phenomenon is reliance on classical devotional works widely accepted within Sufi circles, most notably Iḥyāʾ ʿUlūm al-Dīn by Imām al-Ghazālī. Additional contributing factors include the emphasis of weak ḥadīth on immense rewards for simple acts and the belief that acting upon weak narrations in matters of virtuous deeds (faḍāʾil al-aʿmāl) is permissible. Methodologically, the study employs an analytical approach, supported by historical analysis and critical evaluation, with the aim of rectifying deviations from the authentic Prophetic Sunnah. The significance of this research lies in its historical examination of the role of Sufis and ascetics in spreading weak ḥadīth, its critique of the adverse effects of popular acceptance of such narrations, and its exploration of the factors that continue to grant them authority and reverence. The paper ultimately proposes Qurʾānic awareness and recourse to authoritative exegetical works as effective means of addressing this issue.
