Abstract

Imam Abdessalm Yassine authored his book, "Shu’ab al-Iman" in the dark corridors of prison. It comprises 2,500 hadiths in two volumes. He used to say that the science of hadith is the most precious resource in the realm of Islamic sciences. His choice of the term "branch" for his book indicates his endeavor to construct an ethical, educational, and missionary system derived from the hadiths of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Prophet’s statement, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him: “Faith has more than sixty or seventy branches, the best of which is ‘There is no god but God,’ and the least of which is removing something harmful from the road, and modesty is a branch of faith,” was a great sign in the Prophetic Sunnah because it included three pillars on the path of faith: the heart’s upbringing in monotheism, modesty as a fruit of faith, and proofs of faith that can be found in the easiest actions. Imam Yassine classified Hadiths into individual and collective levels and under moral titles such as truthfulness, knowledge, practice, jihad and patience, and he dedicated a group of prophetic hadiths to each of these branches. This classification differs from classifying hadiths under jurisprudential chapters, or classifying them according to the chains of transmission of the Companions, and it differs from classifying them thematically under branches of faith such as the branch of prayer, the branch of zakat, and others, as Al-Bayhaqi did in his book "Shu’ab al-Iman". Imam Yassine’s classification is a missionary and educational classification that aims to adapt the moral branches to serve collective action, and it seeks the links between individual salvation and collective salvation through major comprehensive moral branches that he arranged in a practical order and reflects his leadership vision and his renaissance project.
