Assessing ChatGPT’s Competence in Understanding Textual Errors (Taṣḥīf) in Hadith Chains

Considering the increasing global trend towards the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in producing more competitive outputs, this development has also created a distinct wave within the field of Hadith Studies. Therefore, this study aims to assess the capability of ChatGPT in providing information regarding transcriptional errors in narration (taṣḥīf al-riwāyah) and its analysis of several hadiths that contain distorted wording (lafẓ muṣaḥḥaf). Research and publications on this matter are still relatively scarce, as the use of Artificial Intelligence in the field of Hadith Studies is a relatively new phenomenon. The researcher employed a library-based methodology and evaluation through generated responses to achieve the stated objectives. The findings reveal that ChatGPT is capable of providing general information about transcriptional errors in narration. However, it is not fully competent in comprehensively explaining all aspects related to taṣḥīf al-riwāyah. Additionally, it is still limited in its ability to analyse hadiths containing distorted wording. It is hoped that the results of this study will serve as a guide for future research focused on integrating Hadith Studies with Artificial Intelligence.
