Application of the Fuzzy Delphi Method: A Hadis-Based Approach to Guiding Qur’anic Recitation Errors Among the Elderly

Malaysia is projected to become an ageing nation by 2030. The rising number of elderly citizens not only contributes to the increase in care centres but also leads to the establishment of religious learning centres specifically for senior citizens. However, these religious classes often receive low participation, primarily due to teaching approaches and methods that do not align with the physical and cognitive capabilities of the elderly. Naturally, ageing comes with physical, cognitive, and psychological decline, making learning processes more challenging. This study aims to develop a set of instructional items for guiding elderly individuals in their Qur’anic recitation, ensuring that Qur’anic teaching is adapted to their abilities. To achieve this, the Fuzzy Delphi Method was employed to attain expert consensus on suitable teaching items. A questionnaire was developed and distributed to 15 experts, including elderly individuals, gerontology specialists, and Qur’an teachers experienced in elderly education. The findings indicate expert agreement on five key instructional items for guiding elderly Qur’anic recitation: (i) Teachers should avoid giving negative feedback, (ii) Teachers must be sensitive to the emotional state of elderly learners when correcting recitation, (iii) Teachers may use facial expressions and lip movements as visual aids for learners with hearing difficulties, (iv) Teachers should wait until the elderly learner completes their recitation before addressing mistakes, depending on the severity of the error, and (v) Teachers should correct errors in a gentle, persuasive manner. These five items were ranked by priority and serve as important pedagogical guidance for Qur’an teachers to adopt more empathetic and effective strategies in elderly education.
