Abstract

Kitab al-Maghāzī by Muhammad b. ‘Umar al-Wāqidī (130-207/747-822) was considered an earliest sources of Prophetic (saw) biography and his principal life and career. It was extensively used as standard reference in classical works of sirah that included earliest historical records narrating his expedition and battle from chronological and thematic line and motif. Thus the paper aims to highlight the essence of kitab al-Maghāzī in the canonical and historical corpus and compared it with traditional and classical works of sirah and prophetic biography. It used inductive and analytical approaches and interpretative analysis of its specific insights and scholarly apparatus in compiling and documenting its comprehensive biography. The finding shows that kitab al-Maghāzī was highly popular as an authoritative and reliable sources of prophetic expedition and ghazawāt and widely used in Islamic hagiographical tradition, notwithstanding criticism of its subjective tendency and inconsistency and authenticity of its biographical account. It has laid the foundation for critical writings of extensive works of tārīkh, tarājim, sīrah and tabaqāt (biographical dictionary) developed in early and later Islamic tradition.
