Abstract

The discipline of takhrīj al-ḥadīth initially emerged in a practical form through the composition of major ḥadīth works such as Taghlīq al-Taʿlīq by Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī, Naṣb al-Rāyah by al-Zaylaʿī, and others. It later developed into a more theoretical framework, commonly referred to as uṣūl al-takhrīj, as reflected in works such as Ḥuṣūl al-Tafrij fī ʿIlm al-Takhrīj by Aḥmad b. Muḥammad al-Ghumārī and Uṣūl al-Takhrīj wa Dirāsat al-Asānīd by Maḥmūd al-Ṭaḥḥān. The primary objective of takhrīj is to identify the original sources of a given ḥadīth and to determine its proper placement within the canonical corpus, a task that is closely linked to the skill of assessing the status of ḥadīth. However, an examination of several takhrīj methods taught in university syllabi—largely based on existing takhrīj references—reveals that some of these methods are no longer practiced by students when conducting ḥadīth takhrīj. Moreover, the component of ḥadīth evaluation has been separated from the teaching of takhrīj as a discipline. As a result, students of takhrīj are often unable to determine the status of a ḥadīth even after completing their studies in this field. In reality, efforts to integrate key elements of ḥadīth studies have been initiated with the aim of providing more practical skills in ḥadīth evaluation; nevertheless, these efforts largely retain a traditional approach that emphasizes descriptive explanation and commentary, without sufficient focus on clear practical application. At the same time, they tend to overlook the role of ḥadīth-related computer software, which has the potential to significantly expedite ḥadīth research. Accordingly, this study seeks to explore a new and more explicit practical framework for the discipline of takhrīj that is capable of meeting the fundamental needs of takhrīj al-ḥadīth studies, through a comparative analysis of the organizational methods employed in classical and contemporary works.
