This study aims to identify the approaches employed by Islamic studies academicians in Malaysian public universities to address the issue of bid‘ah (religious innovation) among the Muslim community. Bid‘ah is defined as any practice introduced without evidence from the Qur’an, Sunnah, consensus (ijma‘), or traditions (athar), and which has the potential to undermine the purity of Islamic teachings. This research adopts a quantitative method through the distribution of questionnaires to Islamic studies lecturers at four major public universities—University of Malaya (UM), National University of Malaysia (UKM), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), and Islamic Science University of Malaysia (USIM). Findings indicate that the majority of respondents frequently encounter community practices with no textual evidence and resolve such issues using approaches based on the Sunnah. Moreover, most academicians actively clarify the characteristics of bid‘ah and expose its falsehoods through lectures, seminars, and scholarly publications. The study emphasizes the vital role of academicians in educating the Muslim community to distinguish between authentic Sunnah and bid‘ah, and to practice Islam based on authentic textual evidence. The findings demonstrate that scholarly and Sunnah-based approaches are the most effective mechanisms in countering bid‘ah practices in Malaysia.
